When it rains AI news, it pours. Hot on the heels of OpenAI’s latest announcements, Microsoft surprised everyone with its own groundbreaking AI reveal at the Windows 11 presentation. The tech giant has launched a new AI platform, Windows Copilot, which promises to revolutionize how we interact with our PCs.

Windows Copilot: The New AI Powerhouse

At the core of Microsoft’s announcement is a new line of laptops built on ARM architecture, featuring dedicated AI chips. These chips can handle up to 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), setting a new standard for AI performance in personal computers. If you’re in the market for a new PC, this AI benchmark is something you’ll want to consider.

AI Features in Windows 11

Microsoft showcased several new features designed to leverage the power of Windows Copilot:

  1. Copilot User Interface: This feature resembles a repackaged version of ChatGPT, allowing users to interact with AI directly. During the presentation, a user demonstrated chatting with Copilot while playing Minecraft, receiving real-time tips and hints.

2. Integration Across the OS: One impressive integration is Copilot’s ability to identify and retrieve files. For example, it can notify users about specific presentations mentioned in emails, saving time and effort in locating documents.

3. Recall: Users can use Recall’s timeline to look back at past activities and find relevant information in files like PowerPoint presentations.

Microsoft states that Recall creates associations between colors, images, and other elements, allowing users to search for nearly anything on their PCs using natural language. Developers can enhance Recall by adding contextual information to their apps. Microsoft emphasizes that all data associated with Recall remains private and on-device and is not used to train AI models. Additional details from Microsoft include: “Your snapshots are yours; they stay locally on your PC. You can delete individual snapshots, adjust and delete ranges of time in Settings, or pause at any point right from the icon in the System Tray on your Taskbar. You can also filter apps and websites from ever being saved.”

4. Co-Creator: Similar to Stable Diffusion, this feature allows users to sketch and have the AI develop it into a final image. While exciting, concerns about potential censorship remain.

5. Subtitles and Transcripts: This feature generates real-time captions during calls. If it works across all video conferencing apps and not just Microsoft Teams, it could be a game-changer for accessibility and convenience.

Offloading Tasks to the NPU

Microsoft also demonstrated how third-party apps could offload tasks to the Neural Processing Unit (NPU), freeing up CPU and GPU resources. This was shown with applications like DaVinci Resolve and CapCut, enhancing performance and multitasking capabilities.

Missed Opportunities and Concerns

While the new AI features are exciting, there were some missed opportunities:

  • Better Integration with Microsoft Office: The potential to directly transfer information from Copilot to Excel could have been a standout feature.
  • Enhanced Gaming Experience: AI-powered game companions could significantly enhance immersion and gameplay.

Moreover, the presentation left some questions unanswered, especially regarding the integration of AI with Windows 11’s existing ad infrastructure and the security of personal data.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft’s Windows 11 presentation has set a high bar for AI integration in personal computing. The new AI capabilities are impressive, but their success will depend on seamless integration, user privacy, and robust security measures.
